The Sub in Me vs. The Dom in You

This project is a thematic extension of Compressed Masculinity. As a collection of work informed by autoethnography, it embraces the non-neutral quality of knowledge (Donna, 1988). For example, some of the images used in The Disciplined were inspired by the mandatory military training that I had to undergo as a kid in China.

I seek to examine and reflect on the power dynamics between the fetishization of masculinity and the self-sexualization of rejecting masculinity through the materiality and characterizations of these personal yet opinionated stories.

The use of glitter in The Shines was inspired by my hobby of wearing long and glittery nails. The flamboyance recurred when I made collages from images of vibrant football attire. To me, the central relationship in this project, one between hegemonic masculinity and queerness, is not just hostile but also complementary.
